Why Does My Bill Not Show a Start and End Meter Reading?
Your electricity usage is measured using a smart (interval) meter, which records how much energy you use in 30 minute intervals. Unlike older accumulation meters, which only show a total reading at a point in time, your smart meter records detailed usage data every 30 minutes throughout the billing period.
We no longer physically ‘read’ meters as was done in the past. Instead, we have a remote connection to your smart meter and receive your usage data on a daily basis. This allows for more timely and accurate data collection.
Because of this, your bill does not show a traditional start and end meter reading. Instead, your total electricity consumption is calculated by adding up all the half-hour interval readings.
This method gives a more accurate and transparent picture of your electricity use.
Why It’s Not on the Bill
Your bill will show your total consumption, but it won’t include the start and end meter readings you may have seen in the past. This is because your energy use is calculated by aggregating the interval readings from your smart meter.
This approach aligns with how energy consumption is measured and billed across the wider Western Australian contestable electricity market.
What About Synergy Customers?
Synergy, the default electricity retailer for many residential customers in WA, refers to smart meters as “advanced meters”.
Some Synergy customers still have older accumulation meters that provide start and end readings. But if a Synergy customer has an advanced meter, their bill will also show only total usage, not previous and current readings, because their usage is calculated from half-hourly data, just like yours.
Since all our customers have smart meters, your bill will always reflect interval data and won’t include start and end readings.
